Global Protocols for the New Normal – Tour Operator

By World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC)

While it is essential that each industry within the Travel & Tourism sector develops clear and practical protocols so as to enable the sector’s recovery, such an approach is even more important for tour operators given their dependence on other tourism entities such as destinations, airlines, hotels, transportation, travel insurance as well as government policies such as border restrictions, as tour operators are often responsible for guests throughout their journey.

The suggested protocols for tour operators were compiled based on input from leading tour operators either directly or from their public announcements around the healthy, and responsible reopening of tour operations to the public. The protocols also take into account World Health Organisation (WHO), the US’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) guidelines. The objective is to ensure that protocols are in place across all relevant functions with an increased focus on health, hygiene, and reduction of physical contact guidance which travellers will need and expect to embrace a safe travel experience.

Note that these recommendations are subject to change and may be enhanced as new information about the virus becomes available. These recommendations are based on the operational characteristics of each tour operator and consultation is recommended prior to implementation. It is recommended that all tour operator practices follow local and national governmental legislation and the latest guidance from public health organisations including the WHO.

For the purpose of alignment across industries within the Travel & Tourism sector, WTTC has divided the protocols in four pillars, namely:

1. Operational and Staff Preparedness

2. Delivering a Safe Experience

3. Rebuilding Trust & Confidence

4. Implementing Enabling Policies
